Krakatau, is a volcanic island made of lava in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. The name is used for the island group, the main island (also called Rakata), and the volcano as a whole. The island exploded in 1883, killing approximately 40,000 people, although some estimates put the death toll much higher. A new island volcano, named Anak Krakatau or Child of Krakatoa rose above the waterline in 1927. Anak Krakatau has grown at an average rate of five inches (13 cm) per week since the 1950s. This equates to an average growth of 6.8 meters per year. The island is still active, with its most recent eruptive episode having begun in 1994. Quiet periods of a few days have alternated with almost continuous Strombolian eruptions since then, with occasional much larger explosions.

2014

16th September:

Status remain the same as earlier this year. A constant but moderate degassing from Anak-Krakatau can be observed at alle times. Seimsic data indicate low activity at the volcano, with only minor tremor and volcanic earthquakes present. No eruptions confirmed since October 2013.

23th April:

According to a trusted source that visited Krakatau in the third week of April, new volcanic material was observed on the northern flanks of the volcano, indicating that the volcano (may) have erupted in early 2014. However during my source visit to the volcano, it did not erupt, but showed a more prominent degassing plume than was present during the second half of 2013.

2013

Seismicity increased in the first week of October, and reaching the highest levels of 2013 in November 2013. A high level of volcanic-tremor was recorded on the 3th and 4th October, followed by an increase in volcanic-a earthquakes in November.  The presence of increased occurence of volcanic tremor and shallow earthquakes may be a precursor to new erutptive activity at Krakatau. A crater glow has also been present troughout most of 2013, but the most intense glow was observed in November.

Recent eruptions:

My remote camera stationed at Krakatau captured ash-venting on the 31th October 2013, please see the November report for more details and a photo of the event.

Visited the volcano on the 4th to 5th October and 9th to 11th November. Please read these reports for more detailed info. on the current activity.

Note: For more information regarding activity at Krakatau from a month to month basis, see the "monthly reports" from my visits.

Oktober 2014. March-October 2015.

* Photos from the scheduled tours: here

There will be a monthly trip scheduled during 2014. The trips are normally scheduled on weekends of the month were the moon is highly illuminated, to make night viewing and photography of Krakatau, possible. In the case of heightened volcanic-activity at the volcano, there may be more trips scheduled. The trips I arrange are all-in based, which means that safe and comfortable transportation, accommodation, good food and beverages,  a foreign guide, and local crew are included.

I arrange these tours on a hobby basis, in order finance my own study- and photography of the volcano. The objective of these trips are volcano observation. An english speaking local guide will also be present on the tours I arrange, and may escort you on some parts of the trip, like snorkelig excursions and jungle trekking.

We will depart from Jakarta, where I will pick you up at your hotel.  With our private airconditioned car we will drive to the coast of West-Java (+/- 3,5 hours), were a chartered boat will be waiting to take us to the volcano. We will meet our local crew that consists of the boat crew, a cook, and a local guide. Always very honest and hardworking people who will make sure we are comfortable. We will cross the Sunda-strait to Krakatau in a descent speed boat, travel time is around 1.5-2 hours. The boat is equipped with life-wests and your luggage will be stored in a dry compartment in the boat.

Our camp on Krakatau will be either Rakata Isl., Verlaten Isl. or Anak Krakatau itself, depending on your request. Most groups now days choose Verlaten Island, as its perfectly located 1.5 km west of the active Anak Krakatau cone, where you can sit on the beach to watch the volcano.  On the campsite where we will spend our night, our tents will be put up and comfortable beach chairs will be provided. Food and drinks will be prepared by our crew. The food consists mainly of barbequed seafood and Indonesian food, but we are open for requests. Note: I do take orders for wine and beers, if you fancy something extra by the camp-fire. Order in advance.

Apart from observing Anak Krakatau from base camp, we will visit the volcano itself. If the current volcanic situation allows it, you can choose to hike to the first level of the old crater rim. With our boat we will also cruise around Anak Krakatau to find the perfect view. Jungle treks and snorkeling can also be arranged in the area. For the most adventurous, we can also provide a hike to the top of Rakata, the peak of on of the remaining volcano cones that were active up until 1883. The peak is 814m. tall and the hike is trough dense tropical forest, making it a true challenge, this trek is however not possible on a one day tour.

On the return from Krakatau we will make sure you arrive in Jakarta (city or airport) by the time requested by you.

A trip like this is a perfect opportunity to practice your photography skills. I’m more than willing to share my experience with you, and I can also recommend what equipment you should bring.

I hold knowledge of the current volcanic-activity at Krakatau, and its history. I have almost 10 year`s experience in travelling and living in Indonesia and speak the Indonesian language. I will do my best to give you a good insight on Krakatau.  My approach towards the volcano is highly conservative and I will oversee that the safety aspects on the trip is taken care of, this is priority. I also always bring my basic-emergency kit in case of small injuries.

To give you an visual idea of the setup of the trips I arrange (location, meals etc.), please visit this site to see relevant photos: click here.
