Activity of the Volcano

Merapi volcano was raised to alert level II (out of 4) on the 21th May 2018, after several phreatic eruptions had occurred leading up to this date (11th, 21th May) and the Indonesian authorities had recorded tremor and Volcano-tectonic (VT) seismic events. Indonesian Authorities (via @BPPTKG) was quoted in Indonesian news, 24th May, commenting, that Merapi volcano is currently “leaning towards a magmatic eruption”, adding that during a eruption 02:56 24th May, Incandescence had been observed in the crater.

I visited the area on the 25-26th May, and observed the volcano for a few hours each day while visual observation was possible. No eruptive activity was observed, however gas emission from the summit crater was particularly strong on the 25th.

The volcano remain on level 2 (as of 29th May 2018)
