Activity of the Volcano:
Observed Merapi from a distance of 7 km SW of the volcano, for a total of 5 hours during 22-23th October . Weather conditions: Fog and haze made observations difficult during this visit. During my observations periods with lava avalanches from the SW lava dome was observed. Activity seemed lower than during my visit in September, however since weather conditions were poor it is difficult to conclude. During the largest avalanches the sound of the rockfall could be clearly heard.
According to Indonesian Authorities BPPTKG, as of the 25th August 2023, the 2021 lava dome on the SW flank of Merapi has a volume of 2.764.300 m3, and the lava dome in the central part of the crater of Merapi 2.369.800 m3.
5 km restriction zone is currently in place for Merapi volcano, according to Indonesian Authorities BPPTKG, The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, Geological Agency. The volcano is as of today 24th October 2023 still on alert level III.
