Merapi volcano, Central Java – 22-24 September 2023

Activity of the Volcano:

Observed Merapi from a distance of 7 km SW of the volcano, for a total of 14 hours during 22-24th September . Weather conditions: Mostly clear but periods with local fog emerging. During my observations almost continuous lava avalanches from the SW lava dome was observed, the early morning of the 23rd September being the period with the most intense rockfall activity. Activity was similar or slightly above the level during my visit in August .  During the largest avalanches the sound of the rockfall could be clearly heard.

According to Indonesian Authorities BPPTKG, as of the 25th August 2023, the 2021 lava dome on the SW flank of Merapi has a volume of 2.764.300 m3, and the lava dome in the central part of the crater of Merapi 2.369.800 m3.

5 km restriction zone is currently in place for Merapi volcano, according to Indonesian Authorities BPPTKG, The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, Geological Agency. The volcano is as of today 24th September 2023 still on alert level III.
